Default Briggs & Stratton 5HP engine won't stay running

You can get a lot of info for free on the B&S web site. Operator's manuals,
parts manuals. You can also order books from them directly if you really
want the hard copy. The manuals and books really are the first place to
start.

Last Saturday, while cutting grass, the engine stalled. Each time I
pulled the cord and it would start immediately but quickly stall
(within a few seconds).

It sounds like a carburetor problem. Before you tear the carb apart,
check for a stuck float valve. All you have to do is pick the mower up
and drop it from a couple feet up. If the float valve is stuck in the up
position, sometimes a healthy shock will jar it loose.

Barring that, go to Wal-Mart and pick up the B&S manual for small engine
maintenance and repair (in the garden section) and read up on the problem
before you do anything. It costs about $10 and is well worth the money,
with plenty of pictures and diagrams. Haynes also sells a small engine
repair manual that is more generic. When it comes to fixing things you
aren't familiar with, the more manuals the better. For sure, get the B&S
manual first.
