*) Make sure the vertical section of the yoke has not opened. You can do
this easily with an ohmmeter.

*) I recently fixed a TV with the same problem. It turned out to be caused
by several things: bad solder joints on the vertical deflection chip, an
open resistor between the Vcc line on that chip and its power source (the
flyback and a diode).
