No. Salt doesn't soften water. The water softener in the machine does
that. The salt recharges it.


Why is there salt in washing up liquid, then?


Do the more expensive washing poweders use rock or sea salt or will any salt do. ;-)

I wonder if the cost of adding salt is included in teh calculations.
