In the end I went to a paint specialist and they advised me against coach
or
yacht varnish as they wouldn't be tough enough and were designed to resist
the elements more than knocks. Two options then - tough acrylic clear
floor
varnish or oil-based bar counter varnish. As the latter only came in 15l
or
bigger sizes, I went for 1l of the former!!

Worked a treat )
