My prefered route would be a cheap tablet on WiFi, amp and speakers.
The tablet would be running SBPlayer and a Squeezebox client to
control it (or any of the other players on the LAN). Players can be
synced together or do their own thing. Logitech have released the
server source code and there is some further development and bug
fixing happening.

There are other commercial solutions but they also seem to involve
the loss of an arm or leg if you are putting them all over the house.
