A simplistic reason might be that instead of every appliance having to
communicate with the electricity suppliers, only every meter needs to.
So quite simply a much lower number of connections for the companies to
deal with.

Also, how would each appliance know which supplier to talk to? Would you
have to tell every one of them each time you change your supplier?
