Its rare to see any genuinely 'free' memory of any size on a linux
machine unless its just been booted
$ free
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 8108788 7631804 476984 53852 559556 4654828
8GB or RAM of which at the time of writing less than half a gig is
'free' and everything else is buffers cache or in use...
That is 1/2 a gig of wasted RAM.
It could be caching a filesystem.
