correct" termination... say where you had a host adaptor with hard wired
termination at one end of the bus, and then both internal and external

If I had any internal devices I would just take the internal
termination off the card and use an external terminator. Then if you
did also have external devices you replaced the terminator with the
cable and put the terminator back on the remote end. ;-)

Slightly more complex was a wide but and devices with a narrow device
on the end. ;-)

But, follow the rules and as you say it generally 'just worked'.
