The one I can always find is kept in the house by senior management!

Thing to do with tape measures is to have one in each drawer where you
might reasonably want one. But label each one, so it can make its way
back when it strays: office, utility room, etc.

Trouble is even the permanent marker stuff seems to rub off after a
while.

I use a Brother label maker, with a narrow ribbon.
