It was their legal right until the War between the States. The South
thought it should stay that way. Slavery and opposition to it was the
basis for the formation of the Republican party. It was the issue
Lincoln campaigned on, the issue the South assumed correctly that he
would try to remedy, and the reason they started to secede iirc even
before Lincoln was inaugurated.

Slavery was the states' right they had in mind, if and when they
raised states' right as an issue at the time, and it's the legal
though not moral right that those who currently claim the war was
about states' rights should admit was the particular right at issue.


Folks forget The Confederate States of America was a nation, had its
flag, a president, secretary of war, etc...
