Amazing the destruction.

A remarkable, if sometimes grim, set of photos. Thanks for posting.

Indeed and for the time 1862 "ish" very good photo quality. Is there a
similar site for the UK not for that civil war but something like the
coming of the railways in the UK around that time?, suppose if I
googoled enough;!..

The nearest English equivalent are Roger Fenton's photographs of
the Crimean War taken 8 years earlier. The photo quality was good
because they used full plate cameras mounted on tripods with good
lenses. The plates had to be developed wet straight out of the
camera so they had to use portable darkrooms mounted on
small carriages or carts.

Both wars will have been covered primarily for newspapapers -
not for the actual photographs but for engravings based on
the photographs.

There was probably no similar incentive to cover the building of
the railways although there are plenty of photos of company
directors and engineers posing along with the workers.
Although most pictures of Brunel seem to be of the Great Eastern.
