All bacteria in water rely on some form of cantamination for nutrition.
However some are sporing organisms which can last a long time without.
They spring into life when nutrition appears.
Not legionella BTW.

Some forms of jointing paste and gaskets have encouraged bacteria in the
past.
(Hence the use of PTFE)
