Personally, $3/liter or $10-$12/gallon would suite me fine.

A big piece of that increase would come from tax increases
which could then be used to repair roads and bridges as well as
start cleaning up the exhaust emissions which are now just
adding to the pollution.

We have been told that with every fuel tax increase but the
administration will steal the funds for something else.

Yep. Like high-speed trains to nowhere (that never get built but pay
off a lot of pol's cronies).

Here in CT we have the highest gas price because of taxes and the worst
roads.

I drove from GA to VT for a vacation earlier in the month (will have
to do it again in a couple of weeks[*]). It seemed that as the gas
prices increased, the roads got worse. Some areas of VT were horrible
- worse than when I was last there in '11 and far worse than when I
left in '07. Welfare must be a better use of gas tax money than
fixing roads.
[*] had an accident with wife's YO Mustang Convertible and will have
to go back up to fetch it after it's fixed. :-(
