I read that before posting and didn't see anything about a return path.

Because the return path is capacitive .... maybe from the bottom of your
foot, across the dielectric of your shoe/floor covering/etc into the
earth on which you stand, via the earth connection of the mains supply
to the power supply of the HV generator. Your foot/body is one plate of
the capacitor and the Earth is the other plate!!

Or something like that.

The HV generator isn't grounded. It runs off an isolated 12V stepdown
transformer.

Yeah, you're right. We were lying. It's actually done with magic but
don't tell anyone.

Which part of the HV generator isn't grounded. It runs off an isolated 12V stepdown
transformer didn't you believe?

A van carrying a dozen movie stunt men on the way to a film location in the mountains spun out of control on the icy road,
crashed through a guardrail, rolled down a 90-foot embankment, turned over, and burst into flames.
There were no injuries.
