Only because the NIMBYs have uswed FUD to convince the politicians to
oppose the many sensible proposals made.

It could be used to fuel power generating reactors, or it could be safely
stored until another use for it is found, or it could just be put into one
of the many suitable sites that have been identified and ignored
thereafter.

The funny thing is,none of these things has happened in fifty years..
