I grabbed a piece of scap to make a part today. It looks like
stainless, is
heavy like steel, and machines easy like 1144. What the heck is this
mystery metal?

It's "scrap metal", silly goose.

Well it worked. Whatever it is. I was all prepared for screaming,
skating and chattering. None of that happened.

Sounds like probably 303...machines real nice but it doesn't weld worth a
****.

And one of my medium term projects will be welding some stainless. I want
to make a hinged hood/lid for my big BBQ grill. I suspect I'll have to let
the local metal bender take advantage of me for a sheet of that though.

I'm going to make a new set of grates for my Brinkmann barbeque, the stock ones are made out of porcelain coated cast iron which is starting to flake off and sometimes ends up as a sort of grit on the food....I'll be using 1/4 thick A36 plate instead of stainless though.....there's a fab shop up in the next town that'll burn out simple shapes with a cnc plasma table at very reasonable rates.

Current plan is to leave one pair solid for use as griddle, and I'll probably drill a grid pattern into the other ones.
