Doesn't the MDF tear out when you change sanding sheets? I'd be more
inclined to gin up some sort of drawbar if the headstock is hollow. If
not, I'd use your technique but glue something like this onto the MDF:

I've got one on my table saw with a slight taper, but that wouldn't work
very well with a non-tilting arbor - get the flat one.
