Though the idea of The Split Bowl technique has been around for a long
time, there wseren't many uses for it when turning was limited to
creating functional pieces. But when "function" was no longer a
limiting criteria for turnings and moved into creating interesting
objects, the Split Bowl Technique opens up all sorts of creative
possibilities.
The procedure is within the capabilities of a newbie who can turn a
shallow bowl and relatively easy for an intermediate turner.
Here's a link to the basic technique, with some examples done by three
turners who use it in very different ways to create really nice pieces.
The web page also has a link to a YouTube video of Alan Carter
demonstrating the process, start to finish.

If you're looking for something different to turn - this just might be
somethig to try.
