A diabetic episode can cause a person smell like alcohol, thought to
be drunk. Recently, a man was at a red light - passed out. Cops
yanked him out of the car and beat him badly. They (city) later paid
the victim, because he was not drunk or even drinking. He was in
diabetic shock.
I'm diabetic and am well aware of the risks of appearing drunk due to
low blood glucose (due to excess theraputic insulin). Symptoms are
stupor, slurred speech, lost large motor skills, staggering gait, etc.
I've never heard of an alcohol oder though.
