I thought popes were like old hoofers (Brucie, etc) - die in harness.


In the past they died in office; but in the past life expectancy for
everyone was much shorter, so it was unlikely that an ailing pope would
linger for long. Now, senility and general debilitation is likely to be
a problem long before expiry.
