eventually builds up and you are correct about the trap and water, it ruins
the entire thing. Some custodians thought they could clean the urinal and
did the same. Those traps aren't cheap.

One installed in a restaurant near here came with a large plaque stating
that maintenance was to pour a certain amount of something into it once
per month.

The plaque has been gone for a few months, but the thing does not smell.
