Responsible employers don't ask for personal information they do not
need. They don't take on the risk of keeping it on file. Some states
have privacy laws that require such information to be kept double
locked for security.


Exactly, too much potential for litigation. My niece is the HR manager
for a ~ 800 employee company and one of her staff spends a good portion
of her time keeping up with various regulatory and compliance stuff
involved in running the business.
