Wayne Township, population 54,000, did not lower its flags -- at
the request of Mayor Christopher P. Vergano.

I's only because they're a bunch of racist whiteys.

The racial makeup of the township was 86.07% (47,097) White,
2.28% (1,247) African American,
0.09% (51) Native American,
8.18% (4,478) Asian,
0.02% (11) Pacific Islander,
1.80% (985) from other races, and
1.55% (848) from two or more races.
Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.92% (4,335) of the population.[

Racism has nothing to do with it - Whitney Houston was a simple
Celebrity, and did nothing brave or heroic or even noteworthy to earn
the honor.

She wasn't a firefighter that routinely ran /into/ burning buildings
to rescue people and preserve property, or a Cop who willingly walked
into Domestic Disturbances to break up the Husband and Wife (the
statistically proven #1 most dangerous thing a cop can do on the job)
and going into the middle of robberies to save people and bring
criminals to justice, or a Soldier willing to lay down his own life to
defend our freedoms.

She wasn't the President or a Supreme Court Justice or someone of that
high stature, where we honor the office as much as the person when
they pass and we lower the flag for a period of mourning.

The Order by Governor Christie to lower flags was a foolish and stupid
move that has damaged his reputation. He tried to make a symbolic
gesture and it backfired miserably. He is free to allow and suggest
that it be done (and leave the final decisions to the City or County
level officials) but he can't and shouldn't have Ordered it.

Well, the big issue with Wayne is this: How smart can people be, when
their houses are flooded out every year and they keep moving back?
d8-)

How does that line go about repeating the same stupid behavior that
has never worked before, and expecting a different outcome...?

It's like Beachfront Property and FEMA - there are locations where
people were NOT Meant to build permanent dwellings. I have a fix for
the problem, but it would never go through - there are far too many
powerful people who own one of these Hurricane Magnet houses and they
like getting the almost free remodels every few years...

If a Government Flood Insured house floods or washes away regularly
at that location, they should pay to rebuild your house ONCE and only
if it's relocated further back from the shore on the property and/or
up on a mound or taller pilings to survive the flood.

If it washes away or floods again and there's no room for a tall
enough mound of dirt to build the house on so it stays, the land title
reverts to the Government for parks or beach uses, and that land is
never built on again. Any replacement dwellings are built on a new
comparable lot on the other side of the highway from the ocean, or
30'' higher up the hill from the river and out of the flood plain.
Period. And no compensation for "Loss of view" or easy beach/river
access.

You knew the land was dangerous when you bought it. If you can buy
commercially underwritten property insurance for that land, go ahead
and rebuild the house and stay there - but you could never afford the
premiums and we both know it.

We the people are no longer subsidizing cheap insurance to buy you a
new house every few years sited in a stupid location in perpetuity.
