Default Mormons - should you hate them?

Yep. That idea has some merit.

For example, at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, a 12-foot tall main
entrance was, in antiquity, mostly blocked off so that only people afoot
could enter. This was done, according to a guide, because marauders once
rode their horses into the Church.

But the camel business is a rationalization for something otherwise foolish.
The "rope" idea makes more sense.
