Seriously -- "how it works", or "what's it for"?

Most lathes work best leveled end-to-end and front-to-back at _both_ ends.
If this raises only one foot, then it's to take any twist out of the bed.

I don't think a soutbend would be heavy enough to take twist out by
raising one foot. It think its just so it won't rock back and forth on
the floor, adjust it so all four legs have even pressure to the floor
you're on.
