I needed one many times, for day or week long outages. I finally got
one about four years ago, and haven't used it.

Good for you. I needed it after hurricanes.

Not a good thing, just a consequence of living too close to the bay and the
basement being a little too deep. If it fails during the wet season, a trip
to Home Depot is in order.
