The problem arises because US ethanol is derived from corn. Elsewhere
it is derived from sugar cane. It also cause increased emissions of
formaldehyde and ozone. Both cause smog and cancer.
Adding ethanol is another way of improving the "anti-knock"
properteries rather than using lead.
