Nice.

Would it not have been just as stiff and less weight to put more "verticals"
from left to right and forgot the "laying down" 2x4s?

It seems to me they only add mass (maybe for hammering) but no rigidity
between the other support lumber. This is usually displaying in the building
codes. They don't care how many laying flat pieces you have, it's the
vertical thickness that counts.
