Agreed, very different and interesting. I would suspect that the dowel
holds half the weight and the face frame the other half when fully closed.
Opened, past half way weight wise the face frame would carry it all and
upper inner side supports would keep the drawer from tipping.

I'd call this type construction, thrifty.
