Just thought I'd introduce y'all to this to cheer you up in these
strange times we now live in.

Comes from a place not far from where I was born.
There are lots of strange things in the UK..

And some not so strange:

Reading about the riots in London, I'm reminded of the poem that ends:

As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man
There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
And the burnt Fool's bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;

And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!

Aside: Glenn Beck used the above as a blurb on his most recent book. A
number of left-leaning bloggers went nuts! They thought he wrote the poem
and used its presence as evidence of a corrupted, possibly diseased, mind.

The poem was written by Rudyard Kipling.

Aside: I had to look it up. A "copybook" was sort of a scratch pad used in
English schools. At the top was a pithy saying ("A stitch in time saves
nine," "A penny saved is a penny earned," and so forth) written in elegant
cursive. The student was tasked with repeating the quote multiple times down
the page to master penmanship.
