sure hope that's it.

I'll bet that it is.

And beware of open commons inside the cap body. I didn't
disconnect everything, so I wound up reading capacitance back through
the compressor motor, so I mis-judged it.

The cap should have looked like this:

Note the broken wire to the common ground.
