In my area the definitive source for consumer information is Consumers'
Checkbook (
http://www.checkbook.org/), but they only cover a few metro
areas (Boston, Chicago, Delaware Valley, Puget Sound, San Francisco,
Twin Cities, & Washington DC). It's not free ($17/year). It's a
non-profit organization. They don't make recommendations, they do
surveys and they rate businesses.
