It's probably that when you angle the wire, it isn't rotating about a tangent
to the work.

Not sure if that's very clear..

If you imagine a line from the centre of the work, through the wire to the
axle that the wire is pivoting on. The axle should be at a right angle both to
that line and to the shaft that the work is turning on. If the wire is
straight/taut , you'll then get a straight line cut.
