I was very very surprised by how SMALL the bomb bay was. One couldnt
get very much in there

When I was at NMU in Marquette there was a girl in my dorm whose
boyfriend was the gunner on a B-52 stationed at K.I. Sawyer AFB. She
arranged for us to go on a base tour. We got to crawl all over an
operational B-52 including sitting in all the cockpit positions. And
we got a look into the open bomb bay. It was about as big as a box car
in there. Lots of room for all the DuPont explosives.

You see those pictures of B-52's on ARC Light missions over VN
unleashing huge strings of bombs.....and then pictures of cratered
rice paddies.

Now, with PGM's (precision guided munitions), less room for the bombs
is required....because they hardly ever miss what they are aiming at.

I was blessed/cursed with doing some BDA (bomb damage assessments) from
the ground in RVN....it was ......frightening to see the accuracy of the
layout..and the effects. up close and personal. Unforgetable. Ever.

When big body parts might include a mostly complete foot sometimes with
a boot or sandal still attached. Sometimes.
