For a one-shot job, pegboard is cheap and makes a good
enough template. Run masking tape over the holes you
don't want to drill, wrap another piece around the bit for
a depth stop.

If you can get deep enough peg board, you may be able to just glue it in
place and leave it. I wouldn't do it for a book case, but maybe a couple
foot wide DVD rack.
