Default Draining a Water Heater.

Like he says, with old WH, just leave it go.

You may have to rig an air valve to a faucet some where in the sytem.
Pump in some compressed air, to blow the water out.

go messing around changing valves may cause your elderly heater to
start leaking.

when it gets replaced toss the regular drain valve, and install a
brass ball valve, for easier draining
