Since I sand *after* cutting the pieces, silicone isn't a problem. Isn't
that the usual sequence?

Silicone is a pain in the butt. Doesn't take much of it to mess up your
finish and it transfers _very_ easily. Once a little gets on the
sandpaper it spreads as you sand.
