A bit of a long shot, but ...

I want to make a watch-key tuning mechanism of the type supposedly
patented by Preston in the 1770s (not the Portuguese "peacock" style).
I've found instruments with them in museums and photos on the web but
nothing which shows a rear view of the tuner, or a cross-section drawing.
Does anyone have any info that might be useful?

Excellent, many thanks! From poking around there are several other
useful pics on the same site.

I loved those hand cut threads.
