I wish more people studied history. When I was younger, I spent
hours at the public library reading anything that caught my eye
but alas, now homeless cretins have taken up residence at many of
them and if the librarians run them out, there are screams of
racism and the protests marches startup again. Welcome to the real
world.

Well, YOU could tell them to leave. If they ask you just who you
think you are, simply say, in a LOUD voice:

"I've fought in two World Wars and countless smaller ones on three
continents. I led thousands of men into battle with everything from
horses and swords to artillery and tanks. I've seen the headwaters
of the Nile, and tribes of natives no white man had ever seen
before. I've won and lost a dozen fortunes, KILLED MANY MEN and
loved only one woman with a passion a FLEA like you could never
begin to understand. That's who I am. NOW, GO HOME, BOY!"

They will instantly conclude you are crazier than they and decamp.

I've actually used the crazy man ploy on panhandlers. When they
make their approach to me I sort of cock my head and do the wonky,
wild eye look and start crying "EEEEEEEEEeeeeeeee, EEEEEEEEeeeeeee"
as I walk toward them with my arms outstretched, fingers wiggling
and my tongue wagging. The other thing that works quite well if
they're far enough away is for me to reach for my black Mini Mag
in its holster as though it was a pistol. They tend to turn around
real quick and leave.

While I was filling my truck, I heard a voice on the other side say
"sir I need a favor." A woman came around the front and when she saw
me, was oops, err, ma'am. She asked for money and immediately I said
No. She kept standing there and I had to shout at her NO! She
finally left, but in the meantime I was thinking if she tried to
attack me I was going to use the nozzle to spray her with gas.

They usually don't attack and a stern NO will get rid of them but I
did pickup some police issue pepper spray at a uniform supply house.
I've had to give a few of them pepper spray baths when they made
threats. I also caught a drunk breaking into my van one night and
sprayed him down. It turned out to be his third felony. It's a three
strikes state here. I do believe the DA cut him a deal because they're
filling up the prison system with three strikers. An interesting
solution would be, when the prison gets full, kill em all and start
over again. What a deterrent that could be. Daily postings of the
number of prisoners and a count down until flush time. I'm being
fecesious[sic] of course but what a scary thing that would represent.

From a woman's perspective, we have to be watchful. Anyplace we can be
attacked. I don't mean I'm walking around scared. But when these weirdos
approach I'm thinking of a way to get away, or else get ready to defend
myself with whatever is at the ready.

Normal people, men in particular can scare the hell out of a woman by
approaching when we aren't aware they are there. I was returning books at
the library book drop. Lots of traffic was going by making loud traffic
sounds. I turned to leave and a man was right behind me. Geeze, a blaring
scream came out of me and I yelled at him not to stand so close.

Another time I was loading groceries in the car and a guy came up to me
while I was turned to the car. I didn't scream this time, but it startled
me. It turned out he was going to take the cart back to the store.

So guys, say something before you get up close. If we don't see you coming
along, we don't know why you are so close and what the heck you're going to
do.

I'm the kind of guy who holds doors and puts the seat back down so I'm
always going to be nonthreatening and considerate of women, except crazy
ones..... Now those, grrrrrr. It's amazing what being considerate
of other people will do for everyone's sate of mind. Sometimes I can
shame youngsters by example and sometimes it takes their feet leaving
the ground while they're being slammed up against a wall after being
less than polite to those around them. My problem is that I don't have
a backup alarm and I often come close to flattening someone who slips
up behind me in a queue, I must pay more attention.
