My father trained on 4.2" mortars until he was whisked off to Officer
Candidate School. When the rest of the unit reached Italy they set up
in an old German dugout, for which the Germans still had maps.
Artillery wiped them out immediately.


Scary stuff. Digging seems to be the essential war skill.

I was reading about tanks, when a tank company arrived to a new place
they had to dig out (usually by hand in those times) tank
emplacements. That was appx. 40 cubic yards of soil to move.
