I'm surprised nobody mentioned dial calipers. They work and are always near
by. I use for those steel chip splinters.

FINALLY, a real use for verniers...
To lots of metal workers I've known, any caliper is a "vernier".
To lots of metalworkers, electricity is new and leather belting is
