Default Box spring mattress alternative?

What alternatives exist for NOT using a box spring
foundation for a bed?

Go to a waterbed store. They'll sell you a few pieces of 1/2-inch
plywood and brackets that will do the job admirably. Back in the
Seventies, they sold for about $15.00, so they're probably $30.00 now.

* Two pieces 8" x 74" (one foot shorter than the mattress)
* Two pieces 8" x 48" (one foot narrower than the mattress)
* Four pieces 8" x 36" with a 1/2" x 4" notch in the middle so two
pieces fit together to make a big "X"
* Two pieces mattress length x one-half mattress width

Put the corner brackets on, forming a rectangle.
Assemble the X supports. Put them inside the rectangle.
Lay the two big pieces flat on top.
Put the mattress on top of the whole thing.

I used to install them in about ten minutes, then put a waterbed on top
instead of a mattress.
