Default Anthracite coal ash on the garden - bad or OK?

s'ok I wasn;t being sniffy :)
a good question... I have to remember not to chuck ash from burning
painted wood (ahem, whistle....) into the compost or on the flower
beds.... also some of our garden seems to be "made" of old "red" fire
ashes - let's say "not a lot grows there......" - you didn't happen to
see anything specifically about red fire ash did you?

cheers

Some people out there reckon it's good in the ice as something to sprinkle
on the ice.
