You can annoy them most by pretending you haven't noticed any of the
digs at you, and continuing to treat them as the best of friends,
i.e. that not only have their tactics failed, they've gone completely
unnoticed.

There's a risk that might lead to a ramping up of the tactics, so you
might instead choose to not actually annoy them further.

Understand that their behaviour is probably being brought about by
their own stress at being out of work and skint, but looking for
something to else to blame it on. Don't provide them with a hook to
hang their problems on by winding them up further - you've nothing
to gain and plenty to lose if it gets a whole lot worse.
