We just bought a house. The previous owners had several cats and a
bird. The cats were all living in the basement and when we inspected
the house the first time the basement smelled of the cats. We
naturally assumed the smell was cat urine. However, the smell sort of
reminds me of a musty mold smell. Is there a way to be sure that this
smell is from cat urine or from mold without ripping up the carpeted
basement floor?? Is there a device that can pick up mold? Possibly a
Hydrometer??

Possibly a human nose??

Cat urine and mold smell *nothing* alike. If it smells moldy or musty, it
definitely is not cat urine. You want to know what cat urine smells like,
stick your head inside a litter box and inhale. Or go to the zoo, find the
lion or tiger enclosure, and inhale deeply a few times.

I am sure the house can be tested for molds and what types.
There is also tests for urine.

Aside from cleaning, or after cleaning, use a professional
Ozone machine while vacant.

Some mold situations need serious rebuilding.

I just heard of one needing torn down from a leaking roof.
