i was going to say for toasting bread, looking at it i thought if it were
for roasting meat (not saying you're wrong rob, only this was my thought
process) if it were for meat they would've incorporated a pan or tray to
catch any fat drippings. that's why i would've thought it was for something
that wouldn't drip, like bread. i guess they had messy fireplace hearths
back then, wipe you're greasy hands on the dog, etc. lol.
