That's exactly what I did. See the attached photo. I must be dense.

I stand corrected. I mis-undersrood David's sketch. You have to remove
waste on both sides of the piece. When you do, it works. Now I need to
make a good tight joint. I posted more photos than I should, but here
are two showing the proper joint.
