Default What type of Pine for the "Rustic" pine look?

Pops,

Home Desperate.
Home Despot.
Home Depot

"Prepare to be assimilated. Resistance is futile"

The Borg are an alien race with a hive mind originating in the Delta
quadrant of this galaxy. Every generation of Star Trek except the first has
encountered them at least once.

The pine was mostly the $2.50 8 foot 1x4's. We went through the stack by
hand and picked out the ones with the closed knots and little if any other
defects. The color was rather uniform in the stack so we were ok there. We
stayed away from the wide pieces in favor of gluing up all the panels we
needed.

Warped boards and boards with loose knots were cut into the shorter pieces
we needed and some of the most interesting defects (pitch pockets, mostly)
were cleaned out with paint thinner and displayed on the outside.

The inner structures are paint-grade hardwood plywood. The drawer boxes are
Russian Birch plywood. The visible inside back is cut from 3/16" wall panel.
The advantage there is that it was pre-finished.

The picture doesn't show that we installed rope light inside the upper
cabinet and along the underside center opening. We also used "antiqued" wavy
glass on the big hutch (Special order, Custom cut, $10 a pane, 16 panes, the
big ticket item for the project). The small hutch used plain single strength
glass we cut ourselves, but the glass shelves were custom cut 1/4" plate.

The small hutch was finished in linseed oil, dewaxed blonde shellac and then
oil based gloss poly rubbed on with rags.

The big hutch was finished with dewaxed blonde shellac, then a oil based
poly with Pecan coloring. Two coats, rubbed on with rags.

I have pictures of the entire build process on the big hutch. Somebody asked
for them and even ZIP'd they are too big to email. Maybe I could burn a CD?

Awesome looking stuff.

The hutch is the look I am interested in. Forgive me as I am a newbie.

What
is "the borg". You say it is #2 pine from the Borg.

Thanks

Thanks. The rest of our work is at www.cableone.net/andya if your
interested.

I hope to get the 8' electric guitar, the kid's puzzles and

wheel-of-fortune
pictures up there this weekend.

Old pallete wood white pine with dewaxed garnet shellac,
http://myweb.cableone.net/andya/cathouse.jpg (Don't let the name

fool
you,
I
mean real outdoor all the time cats).
This is #2 pine from the Borg, one linseed and blond shellac, one

pecan
stained. http://myweb.cableone.net/andya/hutch01.jpg and

Hope this helps.

news I want to build a cabinet for over my commode. I would like it to

have
a
rustic pine look to it but don't know what type of pine I should

use
and
how
to finish it to give it that rustic, used and abused, old look.

Anyone with ideas, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks
