Default Dimpling, scratching, and otherwise defacing metal

I used to distress wood furniture by whacking it with 2 or 3-foot
lengths of heavy iron chain. Gives nice random dimples. Would this work
on small metal parts, maybe if you duct-taped them to an old sheet of
plywood first?
