use zinc plated ones for this.
Muriatic acid would take zinc off first.
And don't heat zinc plating to red hot (or at least don't breathe the zinc
fumes, they aren't good for you).

Good points. I just wanted to point out that the cheap zinc-plated
hardware ages REALLY REALLY well when you treat them with muriatic
acid, and THEN heat them with a propane torch.
